blood sports

I came out of the Brixton Rec the other day, after a quick swim and walked home back passed the station at about 5 pm. It took me a few moments to notice the atmosphere on the street - it packed, busy, people pouring out of the tube. But, rather than the head-down chaos of people moving in lots of random directions like atoms bouncing around, going about their business, there was a general focal point of attention. Heads were up... looking across the street to where another, denser crowd had gathered around a gaggle of police. More sirens started to race down the street. A stabbing.
Hundreds of people gathered just staring. Almost willing something else to happen.

I carried on up the street - I couldn't see anything anyway, and about 100 yards further up, I realised the new H&M had opened. Like being pulled into a black hole by the numbers of people going in there, I was sucked in. I didn't stop long. The crowd was so tight, there were 50 or 60 people in the queue for each till. Mayhem.
Two crowds, probably the same thing going back thousands of years... blood and shopping. Opiate of the masses
